Jazz baby Leon captures the nation’s heart, and walks away with a £1m recording contract.
Former Lothian shop worker – 19-year-old Leon Jackson – was named the winner of The X Factor 2007 last night, beating off stiff competition from Welsh baritone Rhydian Roberts and pop siblings Same Difference.
It is thought that Leon’s debut single – When You Believe – will make like Leona Lewis’s first release and head straight for the Christmas number one slot.
After 18 long weeks of auditions and live performances, 150,000 hopefuls were pared down to three, and a nation full of anticipation tuned into ITV to watch perhaps the most nail-biting final since the series first began in 2004.
Each of the contestants sang three songs in the first half of the show; one Christmas track, their favourite tune from the entire series and a duet with a star already shining in the pop firmament.
Winner Leon took to the stage with a super-sexy body stocking-clad Kylie for a jazz-matazz take on her 1990 hit Better the Devil You Know. Rhydian sang You Raise Me Up in the company of sparkling mezzo-soprano and fellow Welsh native Kathrine Jenkins. Same Difference’s Sean and Sarah Smith were joined by Jason Donovan for a rendition of Any Dream Will Do, a nod to the former Neighbours star’s successful run as a West End Joseph.
Simon Cowell’s last hope Same Difference – who garnered the fewest votes following the initial phone line freeze – were denied the opportunity to share their take on When You Believe, leaving this task to ‘Team Minogue’.
Dannii’s boys shone, but it was Leon – the working class lad who entered the competition to “change his mum’s life” – who walked away with the £1million recording contract and a potential festive number one.
